The Power of Versatile Lavender

One of the most beautiful and most versatile summer herbs is lavender.

This herb with the enticing smell belongs to both medicinal and decorative plants and its usage is most versatile since its blossoms, stalks and leaves can be used in many different ways.

It was brought to Europe by the Romans and the oldest written records state that it was already in usage in Ancient Egypt where it played a significant role in the mummifying process. Later on, in several regions, for instance in Persia, Ancient Greece and Rome, lavender was used as an additive to bathwater because the aforementioned civilizations believed that lavender purified both body and soul.

Lavender is nowadays still very popular. Its smell is associated with calmness; therefore, it is often used in the treatment of depression and illnesses of the nervous system. Lavender is also appreciated for its antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and analgesic effects but it also helps to ease cramps, improves blood circulation, and strengthens the immune system. Only a few people know that lavender can be used as a culinary specialty as well. Its dried stalks go remarkably well with lemon-based desserts and Mediterranean herbs. Moreover, a bouquet of fragrant lavender, bound together by a silk ribbon, can work as a beautiful decoration in our homes.
