Merry Masquerade

According to the majority of traditions and beliefs, the masquerade season is actually the period between Shrove Sunday, Shrove Monday, and Shrove Tuesday. It means the end of old habits – the end of winter and the start of spring.

People used to prepare great feasts during this season because they believed that the feasts would help them to have an abundant harvest.

The most typical food of the carnival season are doughnuts, and they once played an important role. People believed that the carnival season was also the season of searching for love and partnership. Therefore, girls would offer their chosen ones a doughnut. If they shared the doughnut, then this was the sign that the date of their wedding was approaching because each doughnut typically had a wreath around it, and this was the symbol of the wedding ring.
