World Wetlands Day

Water is one of the most important components of life and is of vital importance not only to humans but to other living beings as well. Taking a closer look at our environment, we cannot but notice what important roles the fresh- and saltwater habitats play in the ecosystem.
With this in mind, on February 2nd, 1971, in the city of Ramsar in Iran, 18 countries signed the Convention on Wetlands of International Importance Especially as Waterfowl Habitat. On these grounds, we celebrate World Wetlands Day on February 2nd. Up until today, the treaty has already listed more than 1900 internationally significant wetlands. The treaty´s main goal is to preserve those areas that were persistently deteriorating and shrinking up until the mid-20th century, and to aid their sustainability.
We all know that our waters do not just serve us solely as recreational and holiday spots but primarily secure the existence of our outstandingly rich and invaluable wildlife. Our water habitats are endangered by numerous threatening factors; therefore, their protection is of utter importance as, apart from their prominent beauty, these areas also possess numerous positive features. We have the required knowledge and technology at our disposal, we only need to make use of it and take the necessary steps in order to be able to leave a much greener planet to future generations.
