James the Greater’s Fair and Feast Day in Dobrovnik

In the olden days, Dobrovnik was known for its fairs. As far as we know from old documents, two fairs a year were organised in the village. The first, and less significant one, was held on the Monday after The Feast of Corpus Christi. This was mainly a cattle fair. The other one was held on July 25th, the feast day of James the Greater.

As it was named after the patron saint of the local church, Saint James the Greater, the main fair played a significant role in the past of the inhabitants of Dobrovnik. The yearly fair lasted a whole day and was held in the vicinity of the church. Although Jacob's Fair and Patron Saint's Day was the main event in the village, the tradition died out anyway. In 2015, this traditional celebration was resurrected.  The event draws not only local residents, but also the residents from neighbouring villages, who gladly come to attend Mass and visit the fair, where they can buy various home-made products.
