World Water Day

In 1992, the United Nations designated 22nd March as World Water Day in order to call attention to this really important and indispensable natural resource. From year to year, this memorable day calls our attention to one of our most precious treasures and its fundamental role, each year from a different point of view.

Water is the foundation of earthly life and its presence determines our everyday. This resource covers two thirds of the Earth´s surface but the majority, about 97.5%, is actually salty seawater. Our quality of life is directly linked to the quality of our waters: the basis of healthy environmental systems is good-quality water, and this is what can lead to human well-being and the advancement of health. Clean drinking water contains numerous mineral nutrients which specifically benefit our bodies. Some of these are calcium, which strengthens the bones; magnesium, which has a positive effect on our nervous system, and sodium chloride, which is indispensable in the production of gastric acid and for the activation of different enzymes.

Unfortunately, it happens too often that we are not aware of the significance of water that lies under the surface, and thus human activity overuses and pollutes waters in many places. The preservation of clean water is, therefore, important not only for human life but also for the fauna and flora because our water habitats are endangered by numerous activities. Therefore, their protection is of utter significance.

Let us live with the gifts we have, let us use them wisely, let us protect nature and preserve it for future generations!
