The area of Prekmurje, which is inhabited by people of mixed nationalities, is characterised by different customs and events which unite people and not only are old customs and traditions revived but new customs are created. The area is rich in folk customs, historical and cultural traditions, and crafts, all waiting to be explored. The numerous thematical ethnographical houses, which devotedly preserve the area´s history and culture, can easily be explored by car or even by hopping on an e-bike. Upon entering through their huge wooden doors, one travels back in time, into the everyday lives of the former villagers.

The Ethnographical House in Krplivnik

Krplivnik offers one of the most beautiful ethnographical houses and collections of the region. The 20th century house that used to belong to the Škerlak family includes a traditionally furnished kitchen, a room with a floor, two furnaces, a tool chamber and an apiary. Behind the building stretches the so-called Tündérkert, an orchard that was established to preserve native tree species.

The Domanjševci Homestead

The house of the Kalamár family was built in 1931 and today it operates as an Ethnographical House. All those who come to visit can see, in the main and surrounding buildings, how spirits used to be made here, how pumpkin seeds used to be shelled and dried, can maybe learn some tricks about baking bread and get to know different types of grain. They can also take a peek at the secrets of how a shoemaker´s and a carpenter´s workshop operated.

Alvarium

In the ethnographical house named The Beekeeping Educational Centre Alvarium (meaning apiary) in Motvarjevci, visitors can become acquainted with bees and beekeeping, see how honey is made and learn about its various uses. The possibilities of its use in gastronomy, its role in health care and other types of usage are demonstrated here as well. There is an educational trail about beekeeping in the yard which makes the ethnographical house´s area even more interesting.

The House of György Dobronoki and the House of Crafts

One of the visitors’ attractions in Dobrovnik is the ethnographical house of György Dobronoki where one can see the ethnographical and local history collection. In the yard of the House of György Dobronoki stands the House of Crafts, in which you can see products made out of corn husks, wicker and other natural materials but you must also take a look at the beautiful honeybread biscuits and Easter eggs decorated with the batik method of dyeing. In addition to all this, the House of Crafts is also the place where various thematic workshops, exhibitions and vocational courses are held.
