Gastronomic Afternoon in Žitkovci

The Hetés Region is a Hungarian Folk Region that stretches geographically from the southwestern part of Hungary to the area of the rivers Kerka and the Mura. Traditionally, eleven villages belong to the Hetés Region: Bödeháza, Gáborjánháza, Szijártóháza and Zalaszombatfa on the Hungarian side and Bánuta (Banuta), Göntérháza (Genterovci), Kámaháza (Kamovci), Radamos (Radmožanci), Zsitkóc (Žitkovci) on the Slovenian side of the border. Although the border tore the villages of Hetés into two parts, in heart and soul these still belong together. They are bound together by the characteristic folk customs of this region, for example, the Hetés folk costume, the typical embroidery patterns of the Hetés, as well as the folk dishes of the region.
In Žitkovci, an annually organised event takes place, named “Tasting of the Folk Dishes of the Hetés – a Living Cookbook”. The goal of the event is to revive the traditional dishes and specialties of the Hetés, such as Fumu, a sweet bread that resembles a swaddled baby and used to be baked for weddings. This year, on Sunday, 26th June, the event took place for the fifth time and its organiser was the Gyöngyvirág Cultural Society of Žitkovci.
Thanks to the good weather, a great number of visitors showed interest and attended the Gastronomic Afternoon. Representatives of the individual villages of the Hetés, that is the invited teams, gathered again after a two-year hiatus to demonstrate the traditional, olden art of the Hetés´ cuisine. The most delicious dishes were chosen and revived from the Hetés cookbook which was published in the series named “Hogy ne menjen feledésbe!” (in English: “So it should not be forgotten!”). This year´s offerings included pasulj (bean stew), bograč, tripe, lángos, fried dödölle, vindőshús (meat preserved in lard), various puddings and strudels.
The good atmosphere was ensured by the band Halicanum.
