Štefan Galič

Academic painter and printmaker Štefan Galič is known in the immediate and wider area primarily for his printmaking. He was born on 19th January, 1944, in Lendava. The façade of his birth house, which still stands on Spodnja ulica in Lendava, bears a bilingual commemorative plaque with the inscription: “The academic painter Štefan Galič was born in this house.”
Already at a young age, he showed exceptional artistic talent, therefore, he initially continued his studies at the art department of the Academy of Education in Ljubljana. In 1967, he enrolled in the Academy of Fine Arts, and then, for the next two years after graduating in 1971, he devoted himself to his master's studies.
He tried his hand at many art techniques, and eventually devoted himself to printmaking, in particular woodcuts. He is best known for his colourful woodcuts from the cycles Violins and Butterflies. He organically combined the themes of the cycles as well, so that the cracked violins eventually transformed into butterfly wings.
Galič is one of the most renowned Slovenian woodcutters of the previous century. He had more than 30 solo exhibitions at home and abroad and received numerous awards and honours. In addition to fine arts, he devoted himself to other interesting things in his short but content-rich life, as well. Among these, his valuable collection of butterflies is most admirable.
Štefan Galič died in 1997 at the age of only 53. In 2008, a memorial room was set up in his memory in the Lendava Gallery-Museum, where visitors can admire his prints and a collection of 4000 butterflies from all over the world.
