Vilmos Némethy

Dr. Vilmos Némethy, lawyer, notary, and member of the Hungarian Parliament, was born on 10th January, 1887, in Turnišče, as the son of Ferenc Némethy, who was also a notary. His family was of noble origin, with roots in the settlement of Vinica, Croatia. His ancestor, József Némethy — whose tombstone marks his resting place on the northern side of the church in Turnišče — settled in the village in 1806.

Vilmos Némethy began his studies in Zalaegerszeg, then earned a law degree in Budapest. In 1915, he received his solicitor’s license. After the First World War, he opened a law office in Dolnja Lendava, where he not only carried out his professional work, but also actively stood up for the interests of the local community. Furthermore, as the legal representative of Count Esterházy´s and Countess Mária Zichy of Beltinci´s estates, he participated in the land reform that began a few years after the annexation of Prekmurje to Yugoslavia. Earlier, in 1919, he had participated as a member of the delegation in the negotiations on the autonomy of Prekmurje in Budapest. In 1927, the Yugoslav authorities expelled him from the country due to his political activities and sympathies towards Hungary. He settled in Kispest, where he worked as a local notary.

His political career unfolded during the country’s pivotal years. Amid the Serbian occupation and political changes, Némethy represented the interests of the Hungarian community through both his professional and political activities. In 1926, he founded the Independent Party of Prekmurje and launched the bulletin titled Naše novine. In the 1930s, he became a founding member and treasurer of the Independent Smallholders’ Party. With the support of the party, he won parliamentary mandates in 1932 and 1935. In Parliament, he primarily advocated the issues of agriculture and the rural population, thus contributing to the development of the region.

Throughout his career, he left a lasting mark on public life in his local community. His life and work not only demonstrate his professional excellence, but also show how law, public service, and political commitment can be closely intertwined during a period when the nation faces numerous challenges. His activities remain exemplary even today for all those who wish to build a future guided by the common good and patriotism.
