Festival of Walnuts

For centuries, walnuts have played an important role in human nutrition and medicine. Rich in nutrients, they are not only a tasty treat but also have health-protecting properties. In the past, walnut oil was used as a healing ointment, while the leaves were boiled and used as a poultice to ease skin diseases and inflammations. At the same time, walnuts were an essential part of the Prekmurje region’s cuisine: delicious walnut dishes prepared according to our great-grandmothers´ recipes still often appear on our tables today.

One of the missions of the Hungarian Self-Governing National Community of the Municipality of Dobrovnik is to preserve the values of the past and pass them on to future generations. In this spirit, the Festival of Walnuts is held every year in Dobrovnik, in the courtyard of the House of György Dobronoki and the neighbouring House of Crafts, under the shade of a soaring walnut tree. During the event, the intoxicating scent of traditional walnut delicacies fills the courtyard. Visitors can taste walnut rolls, crescents, walnut-filled buns and pancakes. In addition to these mouthwatering treats, walnut brandy tasting and evaluating are also essential parts of the festival.

The event is accompanied by a rich cultural programme, featuring performances by groups such as the Új Muravidék zither ensemble and local folk singers. The organisers also bear in mind the youngest visitors, offering them craft activities and traditional folk games.
